New Tennessee law says drunk drivers can no longer receive probation in drunken-driving deaths

A new law that took effect Jan. 1 in Tennessee mandates that drunk drivers who kill someone get jail time – probation is no longer an option.

While this sort of legislation is certainly understandable, these sorts of objective mandatory sentencing laws often create more problems for the justice system. You cannot treat all cases the same just because they have similar tragic results.
